Firstly, what are those eating disorders that everyone is talking about?
They are serious conditions related to persistent eating behaviors that negatively impact your health, your emotions and your ability to function in important areas of life. The most known is Anorexia. However, there are plenty of them out there.
What can causes them?
People with eating disorders may have psychological and emotional problems that contribute to the disorder. They may have low self-esteem, perfectionism, impulsive behavior and troubled relationships Some other triggers can be media and societal pressures, mood disorders, the onset of puberty or even a diet gone awry. For us dancers is usually the "perfectionism" factor that contributes the most for the ilness.
As Dawn Smith-Theodore, a former professional dance said in an interview for the Pointe magazine last year : When I was 15 and my body started developing, I thought losing a few pounds would help me jump higher and look better in my leotard. Yet the less I ate, the louder my inner drill sergeant barked negative criticism and soon, the drive to be perfect took over my thoughts.
In some cases this ilness can even be interpreted by a need for control, as a dancer can't control what others would think about her, specially when they are auditioning, she tend to find the feeling of control somewhere else. As a result she thinks that if she spend time preoccupied with controlling her weight she has more chances to be succesfull
